Port Blair, Jan 21: Indian Coast Guard conducted Cleanup drives at different places in Andaman and Nicobar islands including Hut Bay, Diglipur, Mayabunder and Port Blair during the week end (20-21 Jan 18). Coast Guard Ship Vishwast conducted the cleanship at Corbyns Cove Beach. The drive was aimed at sensitising locals and tourists about effective waste management at grass root levels. Spectators were demonstrated how house hold waste could find its way to the beaches and litter them. The event was coordinated by ICGS Vishwast with active participation of Coast Guard and PBMC personnel. MrsSheela Singh, Councilor & Chairperson, Public Health and Sanitation Port Blair also graced the occasion and evinced keen interest in the activities involved. The team of Coast Guard Station Hut Bay conducted the drive at PMB harbour breakwater beach and CG personnel from Diglipur carried out the cleanship at Aerial Bay and CG fuel point. Coast Guard Station Mayabunder also actively participated in the beach cleanship at Karmatang Beach.
This initiative by Indian Coast Guard received great support and applause from the local and tourists to such extent that many of them extended a helping hand by collecting garbage along with the organisers. A total of 900 kgs of waste was collected and later handed over to the concerned civil administration for disposal. Spic and span appearance of beach after the event was proof of hard work put in by participants. Indian Coast Guard Region (A & N) has ensured requisite steps in place towards unabated continuance of beach cleanship drives under ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan”.
