Port Blair, Sept 05: Adding to the power crisis a 2 MW DG set at Phoenix Bay power house has suffered a major breakdown recently.
As per reports the 2.4 MV DG Set which is nearly two years old has suffered the major breakdown perhaps due to extra load of pressure on the engine, following strike in SPCL power plant.
Meanwhile, even after withdrawal of strike by workers of SPCL the DG sets has not started functioning and it is expected that it may take some more time.
Here to repair the DG set at Phoenix Bay a service engineer has already reached Andaman and another is arriving tomorrow who will carry out detailed investigation and send data to Mainland India after which it will be repaired but this entire process might take 15 days.
The Electricity Department is working overtime to provide power to public but due to shut down of SPCL DG sets and now breakdown in 2MW DG set the department has also become helpless.
One can only imagine what will happen to South Andaman region, if any other presently operational DG sets also develops some problems.
Under present circumstances operating DG sets of SPCL seems to be the only option, which might provide some respite. But this is sure that for long run Administration must make some full proof arrangement to ensure that Andaman does not witness any major power crisis if some DG sets suffers breakdown.
