Port Blair, Aug 13: Port Blair Municipal Council has taken an initiative to utilize the waste plastics up to 60microns in road construction, which are serious concern and threat to the Environment and Health of living organisms, in absence of its recycling and processing demands. A pilot project to utilize the waste plastics up to 60microns in road construction is executed at Municipal Head Quarter Road, Port Blair as per the recommendations of Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), which saves 8-10% of Bitumen in construction of Road as well as improves the strength, durability and the life of road in many characteristics.
The PBMC has covered a stretch of 821 sqm. road, in which the quantity of shredded waste plastic used is 50 kgs and the same quantity of bitumen is saved. This initiative was majorly targeted towards Solid Waste Management of Port Blair city to keep its hygiene and environment tidy. In future, Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) will implement the same technique in other urban roads falling under the jurisdiction of PBMC towards better road and solid waste management.
