Port Blair, June 18: The Governor of Mizoram and former Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Vakkom Purushothaman today said that during his tenure as Lt. Governor of A& N Islands, he wanted to develop Indira Point as Ship Repairing Centre.
Addressing a press conference at TSG Emerald View, the Governor said that at Singapore lots of ships wait for months together to get a berthing place for repair of their ship and he wanted to exploit the opportunity by setting up workshops at Indira Point and develop the place as Ship Repairing Centre.
“This would have changed island economy and generate employment but I didn’t get time to do anything further in this regard,” Mr. Purushothaman added.
He said during his tenure he had learnt that every five minute a ship pass through the Southern Tip of India, Indira Point and the area has great potential as Ship Repairing Centre.
During the Press Conference he expressed his gratitude towards the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands for showing such deep love and faith for him.
Regarding present developmental process and maintainance of tourism infrastructure which were developed by him, the Governor of Mizoram refused to comment. “I don’t want to comment anything in this issue,” he added.
However, he showed his displeasure over the fact that some portion of the Ross Islands has been rebuilt by Administration. “The place should have been kept as such,” he added.
He said that these Islands has tremendous potential as world tourist destination. “But I urge the people of these islands to come forward to take initiatives to set up big tourism projects,” he added.
Regarding abolishing of Pradesh Council he clarified that he did not abolish the Pradesh Council in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. “It was not me, the Pradesh Council was abolished due to change in policy of centre government. People of these Islands should demand for Assembly in Andaman and Nicobar Islands,” he said.
