Port Blair, June 11: The Congress party and BJP today demanded release of compensation for the people of Middle Andaman, who suffered severe loss during heavy rainfall last week.
In two separate letters the President of Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma and President of A & N State BJP unit, Mr R Mohan have demanded to conduct proper survey of damage and release of compensation.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mohan has urged the Superintendent of Police to conduct inquiry on police personnel of PS Rangat, who reportedly did not respond well at the time of disaster. Mohan however appreciated the role of Fire Brigade personnel in saving people during the disaster.
Mohan also urged the APWD to clean all drains so that in case of heavy rain again, the excess rain water drains out.
Here in his letter to the Lt. Governor of A & N Islands, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Shama has brought to his notice, the plight of the people of rural areas on account of heavy and continuous rains since last few days. He further stated that large areas of South Andaman and North & Middle Andaman Districts have submerged and flooded with water.
“This has caused damage to the livestock, poultry, standing crops, stored grains and even to dwelling units of the people residing in rural areas. On account of this, farmers of the above mentioned districts are facing a lot of hardship due to loss of livelihood and damage to property,” Mr. Sharma said in his letter.
In order to mitigate the suffering of the victims of this natural calamity, Mr. Sharma requested the Lt. Governor to issue necessary instructions for conducting a survey to ascertain the damages and losses caused to the farmers. Based on this survey report he further requested to issue suitable compensation for the victims.
