Port Blair, Nov 30: ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (CIARI), Nimbudera organised a three days training programme on “Low Cost Nutrient Rich Recipes for Pregnant and Lactating Women” for Extension Functionaries of N and M Andaman at Gram Panchayat Hall, Basantipur from 28/11/2016 to 30/11/2016. The training was inaugurated by Smt. K. Nachiamma, Pramukh, Mayabunder, N & M Andaman in presence of Pradhan, Basantipur, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK, N & M Andaman and others. In her inaugural speech Pramukh expressed that training imparted to extension workers functioning at grass root level will help them to acquire new skills/knowledge. She also highlighted that knowledge gained about nutritious foods will directly benefit to the at risk group of pregnant & lactating women from developing malnutrition. Smt. Sebestia Lakra, Pradhan, Basantipur, while addressing the gathering appreciated all the efforts of KVK, N & M Andaman for organizing programmes for the benefit of farmers and farmwomen and also for their constant guidance to local farmers on adoption of new technologies for better development of farming. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. B.L Kasinath highlighted the need for achieving nutritional security which is indispensable for the overall development of the nation. Dr. Pooja Kapoor, SMS (Home Science) briefed about the objectives of the training and discussed about the significance of creating awareness about low cost locally available nutrient dense food in combating malnutrition among pregnant and lactating women.
Dr.A Kundu, Principal Scientist & Head, Animal Science Division, CIARI, Port Blair discussed in detail about nutritional significance of milk, milk products, eggs, chicken etc in our diet. Dr. Shailesh Kumar, SMS (Fisheries) discussed about significance of omega 3 fatty acid/fish in promoting overall health. Dr. B.L Kasinath, Sr. Scientist and Head, KVK N and M Andaman enlightened the participants about the importance of understanding Food Nutrition Label of ready to eat foods and beverages which will help them in buying healthy food. He also spoke about importance of vegetable in the diet. The training also included demonstration of various low cost nutritious recipes prepared from the locally available produce/ingredients
The training was co-ordinated by Dr. Pooja Kapoor ,SMS(Home Science) under the guidance and supervision of Dr. B. L. Kasinath, Sr.Scientist and Head,KVK,N & M Andaman and Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CIARI, Port Blair. A total of 29 extension functionaries participated in the training programme .
