Port Blair, Nov 01: The National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) has opposed the proposed move of Administration to increase of article tenure of Contract Crew, from three months to six months.
The NUSI has termed such move as illegal and illogical adding that such move will create several more issues and hardships to Permanent Crew.
In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands today, Mr. Dharvinder Ram, Branch Representative, NUSI has mentioned that “the NUSI has come to know that this illegal and illogical demand of increase of article tenure of Contract Crew has been agreed by the shipping administration. Moreover, as per the directives of Director General of Shipping and MS Act, 1958 and practice of employment followed from past several decades, this policy of Contract Crew is purely illegal and the administration should be directed to refrain from same. And the procedures adopted and recommended by the Committee formed under the direction of the then Lieutenant Governor should be immediately formed and executed to avoid unrest within the Crew and legal implications which are very serious and vital in nature.”
Taking to Andaman Sheekha Mr. Ram said that if the demand of NUSI is not heard then NUSI will launch a massive agitation against such decision.
