Port Blair, Aug 17: The entire Appalaswamy family, residents of Bambooflat, was downcast. Master K. Dilleshwar Rao, elder son of Appalaswamy and K. Mohinamma, had come out with flying colours in the entrance exam for admission to Medical College (ANIIMS), in Port Blair scoring 137 marks out of 180 and bagging the 4th position in category IV as well in the common merit list. But instead of celebrating their bright son’s grand success, a sense of despondency had sunk in. Appalaswamy, a poor worker in APWD who has to support a family of five, could ill afford the expensive MBBS course in the Medical College and therefore expressed his helplessness in getting his son the admission in the Medical College.
Master Dilleshwar Rao, who aspired to be an MBBS student and in spite of being aware of his parents’ poverty, studied hard and secured the fourth position among all the candidates. But his poor parents expressed their inability to get him admitted in the college.
For one reason or other, the parents were unaware of the repeated advertisements inserted by the Sudhangshubala Foundation in the media which assured to bear the expenditure of the entire MBBS course of at least 12 poor and needy but meritorious students who cleared the entrance examination. The former Zilla Parishad Chairperson, Ms. Mariyam Bibi came to know of their predicament and informed them about the SBF’s welfare scheme. Not believing their luck, they rushed to the SBF office and to their pleasant surprise, the SBF team, under the direction of their Founder, Mr. Bhabesh Majumder, acted swiftly and deposited the admission fees etc for the first semester of Rs. 71300 on the prescribed date (12-08-2016). The entire family, especially Master Dilleshwar Rao whose dream had come true because of the timely help from SB Foundation, were at pains to find words to convey their heartfelt gratitude to the SBF chief. In a simple ceremony necessary documents were handed over to Master Dilleshwar Rao by one of the team members Mr Kaushik Majumder which was attended by the parents, relatives and
Pradhan of Bambooflat –I, Mr E Someshara Rao.
According to Mr. Bhabesh Majumder, although the MBBS assistance scheme is meant only for the new entrants, the Trust has now decided to extend it to the needy second year students too.
