Port Blair, July 14: Auto Rickshaw drivers of Port Blair City today staged a protest against the Civil Supply Department and demanded a proper system for Meter Seal Renewal.
On date the Auto Rickshaw drivers get the meter seal renewal only when they first check the meter of the Auto Rickshaw with a mechanic and get a certificate from him after spending an amount of Rs 500.
According to the Auto Rickshaw drivers even after their meter is in a good condition they have to spend an amount of Rs 500 for the certificate, which is according to them is an utter waste of money.
The Auto Rickshaw drivers said that the checker of the Civil Supply Department give the renewal of the meter seal only after he cross checks whether the meter is in a good condition or not.
“Why can’t the Civil Supply Department first check the Meter of Auto Rickshaw, if there comes any problem than we are ready to go and repair,” said an auto driver.
Auto drivers also alleged that mechanics have no fixed rate for repair of auto meter. “They charge Rs. 500 to some while Rs. 300 to some drivers,” the auto driver added.
It is learnt that the Auto Rickshaw drivers finally met the Director, Civil Supply, who assured them that he will instruct the mechanics to cut down the cost to Rs 300.
