Port Blair, July 5: The members of the A & N UTCPCR, Smt Rubina Siddiqui and Smt Geetha Raj visited Gandhi Park and noticed that though the Park is well maintained, it lacks the most basic of the provision required for children safety like fencing in the park at the entrance which guards the lake was found to be unsafe and required urgent attention, all places near the lake should have fencing of some kind to avoid any life threatening situation in the future, , the spacing between the horizontal railings was found to be too wide which would allow any small child to skid through and fall in the lake which could prove fatal.
Although the PBMC has provided many playing equipments for children in the Park, but most of them were found unserviceable. Though there are separate toilets available for ladies and gents, a need for special toilets for use by children with low urinals and ample water was found. Arrangement for adequate drinking water was also found wanting. The Members of the Commission have found Gandhi Park in its present state as ‘Unsafe’ for the small children and addressed the issue with the Port Blair Municipal Council.
