Port Blair, June 28: As part of the ongoing ‘Swachh Bharat’–‘Swachh Paryatan’ campaign launched by the Tourism Dept., with the active co-operation of Forest, Lifeguards, staff of Hawabill Nest, the Tourism Dept. organised beach cleaning drive at the sunset point of Laxmanpur beach, Neil Island on Saturday the 25th June, 2016 under ‘Swachh Bharat’ – ‘Swachh Paryatan’ initiative of the department.
The team under the leadership of Shri Farooq Ahmmed lifted around 8 bags full of plastic bottles and other solid waste weighing approximately 100 kgs. from Laxmanpur beach and transported them to Port Blair on Sunday 26th June, 2016 in DSS vessel M.V Rani Laxmi for disposal at the Brookshabad dumping ground. In the absence of facility for solid waste management in Neil Island, it is observed that the beaches are becoming dumping ground of waste materials which pose a challenge to maintain the environment and beauty of tourist attractions at Neil Island.
It has been decided by the Tourism Dept. that in the next 3 months all beaches in Neil Island will be made litter – free by regular transportation of plastic bottles from Neil Island to Port Blair.
