Port Blair, May 17: Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, INS Utkrosh has been regularly conducting public welfare events and cleanliness drives. As part of its 31st anniversary celebration, all ranks and families of INS Utkrosh undertook a cleanliness drive at Corbyn’s Cove Beach recently. The popular tourist destination has been losing its pristine beauty due to accumulation of waste/trash and has been indirectly affecting its ecological balance. An effort was also made to spread awareness among local population and tourists against the ill effects of an unclean environment.
Naval Aviation began in India with the first Indian Naval Aircraft, the Shorts Sealand, landing at Kochi on 04 Feb 1953. Naval Aviation formally took birth with the commissioning of INS Garuda, a Naval Air Station at Kochi on 11 May 1953. Subsequently, a need was felt for setting up a Naval Air Station at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar islands for meeting the Navy’s requirements in the Bay of Bengal. This led to the commissioning of the Naval Air Station INS Utkrosh at Port Blair on 11 May 1985, by the then Defence Minister, Mr PV Narasimha Rao. INS Utkrosh is responsible to conduct Naval and Civil Air operations in a smooth and efficient manner and has an assembly of support services that ensure safe and efficient operations of aircrafts.
