Port Blair, Jan 20: The Department of Home Science, JNRM in collaboration with NABARD organized a two-day workshop on “Financial Literacy for Women Students” on Wednesday. Inaugurating the workshop, Mr Raajiv Yaduvanshi, Principal Secretary (Higher Education) said that financial inclusion and literacy is the need of the hour and stressed on the importance of Earning, Saving and Spending. He also underscored that the advancements in mobile banking and e-banking technology have reduced the drudgery of the people, which is common in conventional banking. He advised the students to make use of the knowledge gained through the workshop to become better managers of their finances.
In his address, the guest of honor, Mr Murli Mohen, DGM, NABARD congratulated the efforts of JNRM in organizing the workshop. He said since its inception NABARD had been working for the welfare of the people by serving as bridge between the government and people. Financial literacy has been achieved through women SHGs and that provided livelihood development for them which enabled their empowerment, he added.
Welcoming the gathering, the Principal, JNRM, Dr N. Francis Xavier, said many corporates are headed by women and it proves that they are better managers and know how to save money. Mr K Venkatesan, HOD, Home Science, explained the significance of financial literacy for women in nation building and role of RBI and NABARD in women development. He also advised participants to disseminate the knowledge they gain from the workshop to their kith and kin and people of their areas. The topics covered in the workshop include the Introduction of Financial Literacy, Need and Importance, Saving options / policies, Interest in different deposits, Insurance bonds, Fixed deposits. Role and usage of E banking, Internet Banking, Credit / debit card, Mobile banking etc., Financial / Resource Management. Etc. The pool of resource persons from various banks and financial institutions handled the class.
