Port Blair, May 02: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions organized processions and public meetings at various places in the union territory today in connection with the observance of May Day.
At Port Blair, Day procession began from the Crusade House premise at 4 p.m. today (1.5/2012) which culminated at Tiranga Park, Aberdeen Bazar. Hundreds of employees and workers participated in the procession which was led among others by Mr. B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU State Committee, Mr. S.B.Chattergi and D. Lakshman Rao. On culmination of the procession, the public meeting was held at the Tiranga Park which was addressed by Mr. B. Chandrachoodan, Mr. D. Lakshman Rao and Mr. SB Chatterjee presided.
The speakers while recalling the glorious struggles conducted by the workers of Chicago in 1886 to achieve their demand for 8 hour working day, expressed concern that the gains of the working class are being snatched away by the rulers all over the world in the name of globalization, neo-liberalisation and privatization. They criticsed
the UPA government for acting against the interest of the working class in the country. They had also criticized the government for the privatization of government undertakings. They had also criticis ed the A & N Administration for resorting to indiscriminate outsourcing and privatization of government work with a view to help , big businessmen and other vested interest. At Diglipur, Hut Bay, Katchal, Baratang, Billiground also observed May Day.
