Port Blair, Dec 06: ‘Unnati’ a non-Government and non-profit organization which is working in the field of Women and Child welfare with special focus in the capacity building of women and girls in hand skills, to shape them into entrepreneurs.
Unnati is also working in partnership with Usha International Ltd, which is a multi-product company with operations across India and its main mandate is to reach out to remote villages of the country. The Usha Silai School Project started by Usha International Ltd, New Delhi is setting up Silai Schools in villages all over India to empower women so that they can earn their livelihoods at home by teaching sewing, stitching other people’s clothes and servicing others sewing machines.
Ms. Shaima Shamim, Secretary of Unnati said that Unnati is the facilitating NGO in Andaman & Nicobar Islands for the project. So far 50 Silai Schools have been opened in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, out of which 30 are in South Andaman and the rest on other Districts. Unnati has been successful in training 638 candidates and 163 candidates are also undergoing training in different villages. There is also arrangement for refresher/ orientation course for the capacity building for the trained teachers. One more added feature of the project is to sell the Usha Silai machine at a concessional rate to the trainees which help them monetarily. So far 231 trainees were issued Sewing Machines at concessional rate trained by Unnati with the Usha International Ltd and Usha International Ltd. also agreed to sanction a service centre which will be opened soon in the Islands.
A recent feather in the crown of Unnati was added today when another Silai School was inaugurated in Lal Bijan, Wimberlygunj by Shri. Manickam, Pradhan Wimberlygunj Gram Panchayat who was the Chief Guest in the inaugural function on 05-12-2015. He thanked Unnati, NGO for promoting self employment and guided the students to learn the skill with hard work and perseverance. He also highlighted the problems of unemployment and encouraged them to start their own business after availing various assistances from the Administration and voluntary organisations. He also assured his full support for carrying out development and welfare programmes in his Panchayat. Ms. Sabrun Nisha and Ms. Monica Belung, trainers of Unnati also shared their experiences of how their life has changed after their capacity building in tailoring works. Ms. Shaini, Coordinator Unnati in her vote of thanks thanked Shri. Manickam, Pradhan for gracing the function and support and also other participants. She said that Unnati will also organise Breast Cancer awareness and Gender Inequality programme in Wimberlygunj Gram Panchayat in next month in association with Wimberlygunj Gram Panchayat for the benefit of Women and Children.
