Port Blair, Aug 21: C. P. R. Environmental Education Centre is a Centre of Excellence in Environmental Education of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India in collaboration with WIPRO – Earthian has taken up a Sustainability Education Programme in South India. The programme involves innovative project submissions on sustainability of water and biodiversity by groups of students guided by a teacher. The programme is creative in promoting environmental thinking among the school going children (Std. VII to XII) which is highly connected to the curriculum. Ten best schools will be selected at the National level by the Earthian and awarded.
The Core objectives of Wipro earthian are Integrating Sustainability education into school curriculum, to critically engage students with sustainability issues through multiple perspectives, driving sustainability thinking and action through the learning process and empowering teachers and learners to drive change in their own contexts and environments.
As a prelude and to orient the guide teachers, in collaboration with the Department of Education, a one day workshop for school teachers was organized at Shikshasadan, Port Blair on 20th August 2015.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Suman Devi, Dy. Director (Science). During the workshop Shri. U.T. Arasu, Sr. Environmental Education Officer, CPREEC, Chennai explained about the Wipro-Earthian Project and its framework. Dr. A. Velmurugan, Sr. Scientist highlighted the sustainability and water issues of Andaman. Dr. C. Sivaperman, Scientist, ZSI, Port Blair emphasized about the importance of island biodiversity and sustainability. Mr. A.Gopal, Project Officer, CPREEC, Port Blair, discussed about sustainability education in the programme.
Further to the teacher orientation, a resource team will be visiting all the participating schools and encourage them to form project groups and work on issues of water and biodiversity.
