Dr.R.N.Rath, Principal, M.G.Govt.College, Mayabunder will retire w.e.f 30th April, 2015. After serving nearly 40 (Forty) years, 04 (Four) years in Orissa and 35 (Thirty Five) years 08 (Eight) months in Andaman and Nicobar Islands his superannuation will be effected after completing 65 (Sixty Five) years of age from April.
His services started in UGS Mahavidhyalaya, Orissa in 1975 as a lecturer in Political Science then Incharge Principal and after nomination by UPSC has joined Government College Port Blair now JNRM from 03rd August 1979. He served in JNRM more than 33 (Thirty Three) years in different capacities such as HOD Political Science both UG and PG, HOD History, Senior most NCC officer for 20 years, chief warden of hostel, DDO, students council advisor Incharge welfare and discipline of the students UNESCO club Incharge, coordinator curricular and extracurricular activities, etc.
He also is remembered for the spectacular contribution for automation of admission and examination wing of Pondicherry University in JNRM. During his tennure in JNRM he handled the Admission & Examination wing in a most effective way. His tennure as a principal in M.G.Govt.College, Mayabunder for 02 (Two) terms, First phase was from 2008-2009 and second phase was from 2012-2015.
During this 04 (Four) years Dr.R.N.Rath has served the college in fact from ground Zero to a model college. According to Dr.R.N.Rath whatever the development in the college it was possible due to true partnership of staff, student, public and PRI members, all these four sections specially the public of North and Middle Andaman and staff of M.G.Govt.College and A&N Administration responsible for the spectacular achievement such as student strength from 500 to 900 infrastructural growth with RCC boundary wall for the entire college, additional two hostels for Boys and Girls, proposal estimates for 36 class rooms for science block, acquiring, 2.5 Acres of land for college playground, renovation of hostels and college building, maintaining college library with Air Conditioner systems, providing 100 percent computer literacy for staff and students of the college, study tours and innovative packages for students etc. Special attentions have been given to sports curricular and extracurricular activities of the college in which students excelled in many fields.
One of the notable incentives for the students of this college was the introduction of SD Naval wing, NCC in the college in which cadets have brought so many laurels. The college now had provided Broadband and internet facilities for students and staff which was a long due.
Besides care has been taken for Photo Copy and other facilities in the college for students for their academic pursuance, Provision for 03 (Three) Generator sets 125 kv for college, 70 kv each for Girls Hostel and Boys Hostel has solved the almost power crisis problem in the college premises and hostel premises, the construction of 07 (Seven) eco friendly huts in and around college and hostel premises has added the natural environment of the college in a dignified way.
To add more to beautification 1000s of rose plants planted not only enhanced a beauty but created an esthetic sense at the time of study. Once upon a time the campus which was known as inaccessible and dreaded one due to snakes, insects and jungles now it has become a plantation site after clearing the jungles and cleaning the bushes. Around 5000 plantain trees of various types like china, champa, raja and tissue culture has given a sense of horticulture and beautiful garden for the college attracting the students and staff.
After uninterrupted efforts of the principal the management of state cooperative bank has made opened 37th branch of cooperative bank with all facilities which will cater the needs of students and staff and nearby public. The State Bank of India has been kind enough to operate 01 (one) ATM branch in the college campus on the month of May onwards which will cater the needs of 1000 of students and 100s of staff and many of public residing from Karmatang-X to Danapur.
Another spectacular achievement for the college by Dr.R.N.Rath is the effort for installation of BSNL mobile tower in the hostel campus and installation of mini exchange for landline telephones and Broadband and internet facilities in the college campus. Dr.R.N.Rath is a great author and has published as author and co-author of three important books related to A&N Islands i.e. The land of Coral Beds-A&N Islands, Tribals of A&N Islands, Recreating History of A&N Islands.
Besides he has published more than two dozens of Articles in National and International Journals. Credit goes to Dr.R.N.Rath for solving the Transport problem of the college by providing 02 (Two) Buses from MPLAD fund and 01 (One) Swaraj Mazda of the college.
When asked to Dr.R.N.Rath what is his opinion about his tennure in N & M Andaman specially in M.G.Govt.College, Mayabunder his reply was “This was the golden period of my life were, I enjoyed the privilege of principal, guardian of students and big brother for the staff and friend of PRI and public. In his opinion N & M Andaman is the best creation of God which bestowed with the nature’s best environment, innocent and dedicated public intelligent and devoted PRI and other leaders, honest journalist, obedient and disciplined students, hardworking and faithful both teaching and supporting staff and what not.
In this sense it is Andaman’s Shanti Niketan, a paradise having peace, prosperity and tranquility. The future of this beautiful newly created district is very optimistic from tourist point of view and production point of view and dedicated work force. I wish the best for overall prosperity for all people of this district and wish that my association will be forever for this place both in heart and in mind.”
