Port Blair, Feb 06: A day long awareness programme on “Scientific Rearing of Goat for Improving Productivity” was organized by Division of Animal Science, ICAR-CIARI in collaboration with Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Port Blair, Port Blair on 03.02.2015 at Community hall of Ranchi Basti, Port Blair. The programme was conducted under the project entitled “All India Co-ordinate Research Project on Goat Improvement”. Altogether 33 goat farmers of the area were attended the training programme. The programe was inaugurated by Dr. A. Kundu, HoD, Animal Science Division, CIARI, in presence of Shri. C.H. Babu, Councilor, Ward No. 9, Dr. Ashok Gupta, SVO, DAH&VS, Dr. M.S.Kundu, Principal Scientist, CIARI and Dr. Jai Sunder, Sr. Scientist & PI of the project.
Dr. A. Kundu, in his remarks, talked about the importance of goat farming and its benefit. He also had spoken about the rearing and management practices of goat farming with particular reference to rearing in the municipal area. He assured to extend fullest support to the farmers for scientific rearing of the goat and planed a visit to CIARI for better understanding and learning.
Shri. C.H. Babu thanked the CIARI for organizing such programme for the benefit of the farmers. He also requested to organize more number of programmes on Animal Husbandry and other areas for improving the livelihood opportunity of the farmers. He urged all the farmers to utilize the opportunity to learn the latest scientific technique of goat farming for its effective implementation for better farming practices.
Dr. Ashok Gupta, SVO, DAH&VS spoke about the care and management of goats. He emphasized on the day to day care and treatment of the sick and primary health care of the goats. He also talked about the common diseases and its ailment. Dr. M.S. Kundu spoke about the feeding and management of goat under island condition. He gave a detail talk on the preparation of the ration, concentrate feeding, balance ration and feeding schedule for the goats.
Dr. Jai Sunder, PI of the project explained about the diseases and its control measures. He also informed about the theme of the project and requested all the farmers to cooperate to improve the productivity of the goats through scientific management practices.
During the programme, the various aspects of goat rearing viz, feeds and feeding of goats, health management of goats and care and management of kids were detailed. The farmers also interacted with the resource personal on various field problems and requested to make arrangement to visit ICAR-CIARI for seeing various technologies developed by the institute.
