Port Blair, December 17: The cancellation of Spicejet flights between Port Blair and mainland over the last 2 days has resulted in a large number of tourists and other passengers stranded at Port Blair causing great hardship to them. The Chief Secretary (i/c), Smt Rina Ray, on hearing the plight of the stranded passengers took up the case with the Spicejet Authorities as well as the Ministry of Civil Aviation, including DGCA.
She requested the Ministry to direct Air India to have a special flight to Port Blair to help evacuate the stranded passengers from Port Blair. Hon’ble Lt Governor, Lt. Gen A.K. Singh (Retd) who is at Delhi, on being apprised of the situation also spoke to Shri Somasundrum, Secretary (Civil Aviation), Govt. of India and urged him to intervene in the matter and direct the Air India Authority to have a special flight to Port Blair immediately.
Secretary (CA), Shri Somasundrum assured the Lt Governor that he would look into the matter. The Andaman Chamber of Commerce & Industries and the local Hoteliers have also come forward and are assisting the Administration in sorting out the problem.
