Port Blair, Dec 14: As part of its on-going Diamond Jubilee Celebration, the Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association has organized a Blood Donation Camp in cooperation with the Blood Bank of GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair at 9.30 a.m. today the 13th December, 2014 (Saturday) at the Tiranga Park, Aberdeen Bazar, Port Blair. Mr. SC Biswas, former President of the Association inaugurated the Blood Donation Camp.
Dr Shahina.M, Incharge of the Blood Bank explained in detail the importance of blood donation and exhorted the audience to spread the awareness about the blood donation. 23 persons donated blood in the Blood Donation Camp. Besides Dr Shahina, the team from the Blood Bank consisted of Mr. PT Paul, Sr. Lab Technician, Mr. K. Madhavan, Mr. Elangovan and Smt Laxmi Kanta, Lab Technicians and Smt Palbinder Kaur, Counsellor.
In the afternoon, an Eye Donation Camp and Awareness Programme on Organ Donation was organized at the same venue. Dr Rohinder Lal, renowned Eye Specialist of these islands inaugurated the Eye Donation Camp. Addressing the participants on the occasion, Dr Rohinder Lal, who conducted the first eye transplantation in these islands, elaborately explained various aspects of eye donation and asked the islanders to come forward for eye donation.
He said that 5 million people in India are affected by the cornea blindness. Mr. Sunil Kumar Sarkar, Sr Ophthalmology Technician, Mr. Pradeep Singh, Technician, Mr. Ratin Mallick and Mr. Shyam Narayan, Opthalmic Assistant also explained the importance of conducting such Eye Donation Camps in these islands.
Family Pledge for Eye Donation collected from the willing persons was handed over to the authorities of GB Pant Hospital on the occasion. Mr. TS Sreekumar, Secretary, Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee through recitation of an English poem explained the importance of the Organ Donation.
Mr. D. Ayyappan, General Secretary welcomed the gathering while Mr. HL Prasad, Acting President of the Association proposed vote of thanks.
