Port Blair, Nov 19: Workers who found an opening on the western side of Cellular Jail, close to the infamous Gallows, suspect, presence of some gas inside the opening.
A few workers, who tried to peep inside the opening, got strong smell of gas and hence they did not enter. According to reports it is still not clear how big is the opening or is it connected to Cellular Jail. “Workers have also seen mud inside,” an official said.
While many strongly believe that the opening could be a discarded septic tank there are many others who believe that the opening must be examined thoroughly by experts before reaching to any conclusion.
Talking to UNI the Secretary of Art and Culture, Mr. Rakesh Bali said that the opening has been kept closed and he would personally visit the spot after which decision about further investigation would be taken.
The opening was spotted by the workers of PBMC two days back while cleaning garbage and removing earth from the western side of Cellular Jail. After removing the earth a slab was noticed on the ground level, which can be removed. Under the slab there is a passage.
Since the “passage” has been buried for long, Oxygen might have been depleted over a period of time. If the authorities are reading this post, urge them to lower a lit wick lantern to ascertain availability of oxygen; if the lantern continues to glow, the passage has oxygen and if the flame is blown off – it is an indication that there is no oxygen inside. Under such situation no one should enter unprepared.
