Port Blair, June 30: The Adhyaksha of the Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, Ms. V.K.Mariyam Bibi visited Havelock Island on 27.06.2014 to inspect ongoing road works and also listen to public grievances in this respect. It was seen that several of the roads for which work has already been awarded, were yet to be completed by the contractors. While the contractor has been citing the difficulty of availability of road construction materials, residents are complaining that there has been so much delay that the road conditions have deteriorated to a very serious extent on account of wear and tear as well as heavy rains natural to the Islands. In one case, the damage is so extensive that it is likely to require more than double the original estimated amount, for creating the motorable road. Residents complained that school going children have to be carried to school by the parents because the road is totally flooded and submerged during rains. For sick persons also it is a serious problem to reach for medical treatment or to return home. Because Auto Rickshaws are in fear of being overturned, no Autowala is ready to come to their houses.
The Adhyaksha gave immediate directions for taking up the badly damaged roads on priority and asked the Engineering section to .put up the case for revised estimate required for the purpose of proceeding with the work. She also assured that appropriate administrative action would be taken against such contractors who agree to undertake work but are-least interested in completing the work, causing undue hardship for the public for their own selfish interests. She was also of the view that the Zilla Parishad should examine the possibility of blacklisting these non performing contractors and asked the Chief Executive Officer to formulate policy in this regard.
During the visit Ms. V.K.Mariyam Bibi also saw the site proposed for garbage dumping yard at Shyamnagar to see its logistic requirements. The Adhyaksha of the Zilla Parishad,South Andaman was accompanied by the former Adhyaksha Smti. Abala Samaddar, the Chief Executive Officer and other senior officers and engineers of the Zilla Parishad,South Andaman.
