Port Blair, Feb 16: Recently a resident of Doctors’ colony found LPG leakage from his LPG cylinder, which looked decade old. He immediately called up a few people but nobody knew, whom to contact during such crisis.
Even LPG Books of all the customers of region had no contact number of officials, whom one can contact in case of any emergency. Andaman Sheekha is publishing scanned copy of one LPG book, which shows that the blank space for phone numbers, were not filled by the LPG distributors, before issuing LPG Books. According to rough survey almost 90 percent LPG books has no emergency contact number, which is a major lapse.
Meanwhile, in the above mentioned case, anyhow the person gathered phone number of Consumer Cooperative Stores (CCS) office and contacted concerned person. But sadly instead of rushing for help the person on the other side of the phone advised the customers to carry the leaking LPG cylinder to Brookshabad Godown, from where they would replace the cylinder. Such careless work culture and insensitivity are nothing but open invitations for disaster.
This is the state of alertness and preparedness among authorities. LPG cylinders are very dangerous and can kill dozens of person if it busts. In thickly populated areas, such disasters may cause massive fire and kill many.
When Andaman Sheekha contacted the Secretary of CCS he asked Andaman Sheekha reporter to talk to a clerk in this regard. The clerk accepted that in present LPG books no such contact numbers are given by the CCS will soon issue new LPG Book, which will carry contact number of people, whom one can contact in case of emergencies like Gal Leak.
Hope authorities will wake up before it is too late. After any major disaster ordering a Magisterial Inquiry and Arresting people can’t save lives of innocent people.
Infact the need of the hour is also an alternate LPG agency for A & N Islands, one – to break the monopoly and two – the demand-supply gap is getting wider. Also, I would like to ask here is that why consumer has to always go to CCS / Priya counter for booking and why cannot the phone booking be the only requirement.
