Port Blair, Jan 06: The DMK today demanded to declare Pongal as Public Holiday in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor of A & N Islands, Mr. A. R. Marudhavanan, State Organiser of DMK today said that this year Pongal has not been listed in the Administration’s list of holidays for the year 2014.
“It has come as a rude shock to the Tamilian Community of these islands as Tamils constitute around 30% of the total population of these Islands. Pongal and Makarsankranthi are celebrated with much gaiety among Tamilians and Other North Indian Communities of these Islands. Announcing the same as Restricted Holiday’s has put the whole Tamilian as well as the North Indian Communities in shame,” Mr. Marudhavanan added.
