Port Blair, Nov 06: The Directorate of Disaster Management is going to conduct Mock Exercise on Earthquake and Tsunami on Nov 22, 2013 from 0930 hrs onwards in various places to create awareness among general public in the respected scenarios.
The Mock Exercise is organizing Andaman & Nicobar Administration in collaboration with primarily Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority, National Disaster Response Force and INCOIS in these islands to inculcate the spirit of disaster preparedness and to improve emergency response.
The exercise will not only emphasize testing of communications from warning centre to its stakeholders, but also provide an opportunity for testing local chains of command and decision-making, including the alerting and evacuation of people from selected coastal communities. It will also provide an opportunity to promote emergency response plans and tsunami preparedness.
Community level participation is expected in Junglighat ward No. 7 & 8, Bambooflat Shore Point, Hope Town, Nimbutala Jetty, Aamkunj at Rangat, Mus, Small Lapathy, Kinmai and Kakana at Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay area. All Colleges and Schools of A&N Islands will also participate in the Mock Exercise.
The Exercise will be simulate an earthquake of magnitude of 9.0 momentum wave at 0930 hrs in Sumatra which is expected to generate tidal wave of amplitude 3 to 5 meters.
