Port Blair, Mar 06: A&N State Social Welfare Board celebrated “International Women’s Day” with series of programmes. Smti. Punya Salila Srivastava, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Shipping), A&N Admin inaugurated the programme by lighting of lamp as Chief Guest. A large gathering of women, the office bearers of Mahila Mandals, NGOs representatives, women activists and prominent social workers, Media comprising more than 300 participants in the colourful function held at Tagore Auditorium, Middle Point, Port Blair. The function was presided over by Smti. Ratna Kannan, Chairperson,A&NStateSocial Welfare Board. Smti. Ratna Kannan welcomed the chief guest by presenting bouquets. She also presented bouquets to Mrs. Kuldeep Rai Sharma and Smti. Firdosh Bibi, Chairperson, PBMC.
In her presidential address , the Chairperson A&N Social Welfare Board broughtforth the gradual development of women over the decades and said that the women of A&N Islands are in no way lagging behind.
05 Eminent Women have been felicitated for their dedicated services to theIslands. Smti. Raj Mahajan, President, Inner Wheel Club, Port Blair, Smti. Pappi Naidu, President, Jhansi Rani Mahila Mandal,HutBay, Little Andaman and Smti. Mary Lakra, President, Mahila Mandal, Mathura, South Andaman for their Mahila Mandals, Women and Child development activities and for Social Work. Smti. T. Kamala, PGT (Tamil),Govt. Sr. Sec.School, Bathubasthi was honoured in the field of education and Smti. Mallika Devi Pillai, Nursing Sister,G.B.PantHospital, Port Blair was also honoured for whole hearted care to the patients.
Annual Report of A&N Social Welfare Board for the year 2010-11 was also released by the Chief Guest on this day.
Smti. Punya Salila Srivastava, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Shipping), in her address she explained the issues related to women. She stressed that everybody is equal before the law and women should come forward to be empowered. She was very much impressed with the speech delivered by Smti. Sajida Zubair, Secretary, Malarvadi, Children Centre.
Kumari Bala Karthika, Student of KV-II presented welcome dance and Kumari Sumi, (Visually challenged) Student of Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Port Blair presented welcome song on Women’s Day which were appreciated by one and all.
Smti. Sajida Zubair, Secretary, Malarvadi, Children Centre, Wimberlygunj, S/Andaman, Smti. Malti Mandal, State Board Member, Miss Mariam Bibi, Ex-Adhyaksha, Zilla Parishad and Mrs Kuldeep Rai Sharma were delivered speech on present status of women, growing incidents of violence against women and measures to check domestic violence.
Smti. Geeta, PGT,Govt. Model Sr. Sec.School, Port Blair presented the whole programme of International Women’s Day.
The Programme was concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Mr. C.R. Das, A&N SWB.
