Port Blair, September 5: The birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former President of India, a great philosopher and teacher was celebrated today as Teachers Day. To mark the occasion, a glittering function was organized at Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Port Blair this evening. The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, was the chief guest and gave away Best Teachers Award to 17 teachers and 9 different educational zones for their performance, dedication and commitment towards their profession.
Speaking on the occasion, the Lt Governor described teaching as the most noble profession as it is the teachers who lay the foundation for creating enlightened citizens. He stated that teachers and parents are the role models for children and are responsible for creating good citizens by inculcating good values and strong motivation in the students. It is, therefore, imperative that teachers must continue to work with commitment and dedication. Apart from paying attention to normal students, they must give special focus to the weaker students. A true teacher not only deals with academics alone but also guides the students in each and every sphere of life by giving the right guidance. Teachers must also inculcate a sprit among the children to aim for the sky which would give them the confidence to move ahead and be ready to accept any challenge in life. The Lt Governor also appreciated the wonderful cultural programme presented by the teachers of different schools, adding that teachers must pass on their talents to their students.
In his brief address, the Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash complimented the teachers for presenting a wonderful programme on the occasion. He assured the teaching community that the Administration will extend all possible help to resolve their problem and issues. He stated that the Education Department will ensure that transfer policy is implemented in a fair and transparent manner. Earlier, the Principal Secretary (Education), Smt Rina Ray welcomed the Chief guest and others invitees and the Secretary-cum-Director (Education), Shri D. N. Singh proposed the vote of thanks.
