Port Blair, Feb 27: The Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, Mr. SS Balakrishnan Nair visited Mannarghat and Shoalbay Gram Panchayats on Saturday to review works under PRIs especially the Zilla Parishad. At Mannarghat Gram Panchayat, the Adhyaksh reviewed the progress of Community Hall, Malappuram constructed by the Zilla Parishad and instructed pending works to be executed by the Gram Pradhan.
The Pradhan requested the Adhyaksh for construction of two CC roads, two retaining walls and one rural road by the Zilla Parishad subject to availability of funds. The Adhyaksh assured to take up the issue of releasing of water in the pipelines laid by APWD for the tsunami shelter for 35 families by NGO at Mannanagar and for the residents of Kalatang.
To augment water supply in the rural South Andaman, the Adhayksh took stock of the Kalatang and Shoal Bay -19 Nallah and assured that the Zilla Parishad will take up construction of weirs for improving water availability under sustainable water shed management programmes.
On a request by the Pradhan and the Zilla Parishad member for extension of the play ground at Shoal Bay, the Adhyaksh informed that as there is shortage of land, upon surrendering of neighbouring land this can be taken up after inclusion in the plan. A couple of villagers at Wright Myo jetty apprised the Adhyaksh about inundation of water in their houses after Tsunami, an estimate for the work was passed in the Zilla Parishad some years back to which, he assured the villagers of taking up this earth filling work behind their houses by the Zilla Parishad on priority.
The Adhyaksh also reviewed work carried out under MGNREGA and suggested new projects like Kalatang and Shoalbay -19 nallah by desilting to improve water storage, collection of pebbles and stones which can be utilized for laying on katcha road to be taken up in these areas.
In a separate visit to Dollygunj and Sippighat Gram Panchayat today, the Adhyaksh has instructed improvement and construction of a rural road opposite Govt. Polytechnic to Mr. Govind Swamy house at new Pahargaon measuring about 400 meters in length. He further took stock of water supply at Sippighat where the Gram panchayat supplies water to 250 households through a well at the Gram Panchayat compound which runs dry during the summer season. In a communication to the Chief Engineer, PWD, the Adhyaksh has requested for setting up a desalination plant to supply water to the 250 households of Sippighat.
The Adhyaksh during his visit was accompanied by Mr. Sukumar Das, Up- Adhyaksh Zilla Parishad, Mr. AP Jabir, Pradhan, Mannarghat Gram Panchayat, Mr. A.R. Kumar, Pradhan, Shoalbay Gram Panchayat, Mr. Deva Kumar, Zilla Parishad member, Mr. N.Yousuf, Panchayat Samiti member and other PRI members of the area. The officials who comprised the tour party included Mr. Yashvi Parekh, EE, Zilla Parishad, Mr. R.K.Bepari, AE, Panchayat Samiti, Ferrargunj and concerned area junior engineers and other staff, a communication received here said.
