Port Blair, Feb 26: The Garbage bins of Port Blair Municipal Council have become a good source of amusement for visiting tourists. Infact every tourist bring out some time to take photographs of these wonder garbage bins of Port Blair Municipal Councils, which looks more like a government shelter for stray dogs and cattle.
As these garbage bins, without any door, presently gather animal excreta more than other waste, general public prefers to dump all garbage on the road just outside these garbage bins and thus instead of keeping the city clean these garbage bins help in defacing Port Blair. Poor sanitary workers are the worst sufferers, who have to clean garbage from road and also cow dung and other animal excreta from these garbage bins.
Though the concept of constructing a hut like Garbage bins with two different chambers for bio-degradable and non-biodegradable, actually proposed by former Secretary of PBMC, Mr. Satish Mathur, was good but things went wrong while implementation of the concept and construction of the garbage bins.
Actually the PBMC had planned nearly 300 such garbage bins but only 50 odds were constructed and surprisingly most of these garbage bins remain incomplete even today. Most shockingly most of the garbage bins had its own design, some has triangular roof, while some others have slanting, a few have iron grill doors, while other don’t, some are coloured while some of these don’t even have plaster.
“What is the point of having two different chambers for bio-degradable and non-biodegradable waste when the sanitary workers dump all the garbage in same truck,” questions an old resident of Port Blair city.
When Andaman Sheekha contacted the present Secretary of PBMC, Mr. Rakesh Bali, he said that the PBMC is aware of these facts.
“There were complaints sanitary workers do not get enough room inside these garbage bins for cleaning, if doors are installed. This is the reason why now we are planning to put curtains on these garbage bins,” he said.
But it seems that these garbage bins require much more efforts than just putting curtains. Infact all these garbage bins need to total make over with proper planning. If nothing is done by PBMC in this regard, public will prefer to dump garbage on road as they have been doing till now.
