Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 11: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), through the Veterinary Dispensary, Manglutan, successfully conducted a Farmers’ Field School (FFS) training on scientific goat farming at the goat farm at Coffee Bagicha under the National Livestock Mission (NLM).
Resource persons from ICAR-CIARI and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) guided the farmers on scientific goat management practices. Special emphasis was laid on Artificial Insemination in goats using Beetal and Sirohi breeds for genetic improvement and better productivity. Tree fodders such as Subabul, Agatha, Moringa and Jackfruit leaves were demonstrated as low-cost and nutritious feed resources for goats.
Livestock inputs along with fodder saplings were also distributed to the participating farmers to encourage adoption of improved feeding and management practices at the farm level. The farmers actively interacted with the resource persons and showed keen interest in the scientific methods demonstrated during the programme.
The training aimed at promoting scientific goat rearing practices and improving productivity among local farmers. The Department of AH&VS remains committed to organising Farmers’ Field Schools and capacity-building programmes under NLM for the benefit of livestock farmers in the Islands, a press release from Dept. of AH&VS said.
