Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 10: Raising serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of the National Highway, Mr. Venkateswar Rao, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Shivapuram, has demanded immediate and permanent restoration of the approximately 25-km NH road stretch from Dasrathpur Sai Baba Temple to Thoratang Nallah Bridge.
In a representation submitted to the Regional Officer, NHIDCL, Mr. Rao stated that despite repeated repairs, the road has again developed extensive potholes, damaged surfaces, waterlogging, mud and slippery stretches, causing severe inconvenience to commuters and increasing the risk of accidents.
He pointed out that the previous repair work, reportedly completed in March 2026, deteriorated within a short period. He has sought a technical inspection and quality assessment of the earlier work, including the materials used, quantities executed and compliance with prescribed technical specifications.
Mr. Rao further stated that during the DISHA Committee meeting held on 4 September 2026 at the DC Office, Mayabunder, concerns were raised regarding the proposed repair of the stretch through pothole filling. He stressed that mere pothole filling cannot be considered a permanent solution for an important NH route and demanded proper bituminous black-topping/resurfacing.
He has also requested strict quality testing, technical supervision, proper drainage measures and effective utilization of public funds to prevent repeated expenditure on temporary repairs.
“The people need a safe, durable and properly constructed NH-standard road, not repeated temporary patchwork,” Mr. Rao said in his representation.
He further stated that, if necessary, the matter would be taken up with the higher authorities and pursued through lawful and democratic means in the larger public interest.
Mr. Rao has requested NHIDCL to take immediate action and ensure permanent restoration of the affected road stretch at the earliest, keeping public safety and the interests of the people of North & Middle Andaman in priority.
