Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 08: An Awareness Session on Suicide Prevention was organized at Mahatma Gandhi Government College, Mayabunder, on 8 September 2026 at 11.00 a.m. on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day. The programme was held in the Conference Hall of the College with the objective of creating awareness among students about suicide prevention, mental health, emotional well-being, and the importance of seeking timely support. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Yashodhra S. Mehta, HoD of Hindi and Dr. G. Godson Bedeiah, Assistant Professor of English. Ms. Aliena of III-Year Geography compered the programme and conducted the proceedings smoothly. The session featured a team of resource persons comprising Dr. Aathira J. Prakash, Psychiatrist; Ms. Prerna, Clinical Psychologist; and Mr. Suurajit Rooy, Psychiatric Social Worker. The resource persons shared valuable insights on mental health, emotional challenges, early identification of distress, and the importance of reaching out for professional help and support.
Dr. Aathira J. Prakash interacted with the students and conducted a few engaging activities aimed at promoting self-awareness and encouraging open discussion on emotional well-being. The students participated enthusiastically in the activities, making the session highly interactive and meaningful.
The awareness session provided an important platform for students to understand the significance of mental health and suicide prevention and to recognize the importance of creating a supportive and empathetic environment where individuals can seek help without hesitation.
The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. Yashodhra S. Mehta, HoD of Hindi, who expressed gratitude to the resource persons, students, and all those who contributed to the successful conduct of t h e programme. The session was a meaningful initiative towards promoting mental health awareness and fostering a culture of care, empathy, and support among the student community.
