Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 27: A group of fuming Auto drivers and local residents staged a road blockade in the old Junglighat Jetty/ Dairy Farm Sea Shore road area today to protest against the deteriorated condition of the roads. The protesters highlighted the difficulties being faced by commuters, local residents and patients during emergencies and demanded that the administration immediately begin repair work.
Auto drivers said that the roads connecting the lower areas of Fish Colony, Vijay Bagh, Dairy Farm and Tirupati Temple have deteriorated badly at several places. They said potholes and damaged stretches of road were causing serious inconvenience to passengers and motorists. According to them, the poor condition of the roads could also create difficulties in transporting pregnant women and other seriously ill patients to hospitals during emergencies.
The protesters said that despite the roads remaining in poor condition for a long time, the expected repair work had not been carried out. They demanded immediate repairs to the damaged stretches and necessary steps to ensure smooth movement of vehicles in the area.
After receiving information about the protest, the Tehsildar reportedly reached the spot and inspected the damaged portions of the road. He listened to the concerns of the protesters and reviewed the condition of the affected stretches. The Tehsildar assured them that patchwork would be started immediately and that the process for undertaking comprehensive repair work would also begin by the end of the month. He further assured that he would personally monitor the progress of the repair work.
Following the assurance of immediate action and the commencement of repair work within the stipulated timeframe, the auto drivers and local residents withdrew their protest and lifted the road blockade, following which traffic movement returned to normal.
However, the protesters warned that they would be compelled to resume their agitation if the repair work was not started or completed within the promised timeframe.
