Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 20: Mr. B. Kamaraju, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat, Long Island, has raised serious concern over the critical power situation at Long Island, stating that only one out of the four Diesel Engine Generator (DG) sets installed for power generation on the island is presently functional.
While talking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, Mr. Kamaraju said that the remaining three DG sets are non-functional, while the only operational generator is also in a deteriorated condition and may break down at any time. He said that the situation poses a serious threat to the uninterrupted power supply of Long Island and requires immediate intervention by the Electricity Department.
Mr. Kamaraju has also written a letter dated August 5, 2026, to the Superintending Engineer, Electricity Department, Sri Vijaya Puram, with copies marked to the Assistant Commissioner, Rangat, and the Executive Engineer, Electricity Department, Rangat Bay, seeking urgent repair and restoration of the non-operational generator sets.
In his letter, Mr. Kamaraju stated, “At present, out of the four Diesel Engine Generator sets installed for power generation, only one DG set is operational. The condition of the sole operational DG set is also unsatisfactory and is susceptible to breakdown at any time.”
He further stated in the letter that continued dependence on a single generator poses a serious risk to the uninterrupted power supply of Long Island. In the event of its failure, the entire island could face a complete power outage, severely affecting Government offices, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, communication services and other essential public services.
Mr. Kamaraju has requested the Electricity Department to accord top priority to the immediate repair and restoration of the three non-functional DG sets. He has also sought comprehensive servicing and preventive maintenance of the presently operational generator to ensure its reliable performance until the remaining units are restored.
Describing the matter as most urgent, Mr. Kamaraju urged the concerned authorities to take necessary action at the earliest to prevent a possible complete power failure and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to the residents of Long Island.
