Sri Vijaya Puram, August 16: The State Control Room of the Directorate of Disaster Management has issued a weather warning for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning at one or two places during the next seven days.
According to the warning issued on August 16, gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, along with lightning and thunderstorms, are likely at isolated places across the islands from Sunday, August 16, to Saturday, August 22.
A separate warning has also been issued for fishermen along and off the Andaman and Nicobar coasts. Squally winds reaching 35–45 kmph, occasionally gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely to prevail from August 16 to August 17. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
The advisory also includes a swell surge warning for the Andaman and Nicobar coast. Swell waves with a period of 16–19 seconds and wave heights of around 1.9–2.4 metres are forecast until 8:30 am on August 17. The authorities have advised boats to operate with utmost vigilance and urged people engaged in recreational activities near the sea to exercise caution.
The State Control Room has also issued a farmer warning for the next five days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are likely at one or two places over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The advisory has been circulated to various departments and agencies, including Doordarshan, All India Radio, the Directorate of Shipping Services, Port Management Board, Fisheries, Agriculture, Police, Fire Services, Electricity Control Room, Forest Department, State Urban Development authorities and other emergency coordination centres.
The authorities have advised residents, fishermen, farmers and visitors to remain alert and follow official advisories during the period of adverse weather conditions. The port warning indicates little change in the weather outlook for the subsequent two days.
