Sri Vijaya Pyram, Aug 14: Former Pramukh of Mayabunder, Abdul Siddique, has urged the North & Middle Andaman District Administration to take immediate and strict measures for the effective management and control of stray dogs in Mayabunder, Pokadera and Rampur Panchayats, citing growing concerns over dog bites, road safety and public security.
In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, North & Middle Andaman District, Siddique highlighted the increasing population of stray dogs in the region and said that several incidents of dog bites involving members of the public, including children, have been reported, creating serious concern among residents.
He pointed out that stray dogs are frequently seen in groups around hotels, roadside eateries and other areas where food waste is left uncovered or improperly disposed of. According to him, the congregation of stray dogs has also resulted in instances of aggressive behaviour, including chasing two-wheelers and targeting male and female riders, creating fear and panic among commuters.
Siddique said such incidents pose a serious risk to road safety, as riders may lose control of their vehicles while attempting to avoid stray dogs, potentially resulting in severe or even fatal accidents.
He further urged the administration to issue strict directions to private hotels, food stalls and other establishments to ensure that leftover food and waste are not dumped in open areas or nearby surroundings. He also called for proper waste disposal mechanisms and action against violations.
The former Pramukh also raised concern over the feeding of stray dogs at public places, stating that such practices may contribute to the gathering of large numbers of dogs and increase the possibility of aggressive behaviour. He requested that necessary directions be issued to regulate such activities while ensuring that applicable rules and regulations are followed.
Referring to the recent directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court concerning the management and control of stray dogs, Siddique stressed the need for effective implementation of the applicable directions in the Mayabunder region. He alleged that despite earlier action against stray dogs, there has been little visible implementation on the ground.
He also highlighted the presence of a large number of stray dogs around Dr. R.P. Hospital, APWD Guest House premises, school premises, Government offices, Police Station and other public locations, describing the situation as a serious concern for public safety and security.
Siddique has appealed to the District Administration to issue immediate directions to the concerned departments and Panchayats for effective control and management of stray dogs in the affected areas and to ensure compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and applicable rules.
He further requested the administration to initiate appropriate follow-up action and take necessary preventive measures in the interest of public safety, particularly for children, senior citizens and two-wheeler commuters.
