Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 06: The Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, has initiated the implementation of the Livestock Insurance Scheme under the National Livestock Mission (NLM) during the financial year 2026-27.
In the first round of implementation, a total of 2,942 animals will be insured in South Andaman District. The scheme aims to provide much-needed financial protection to livestock farmers against the risk of loss of animals due to disease, accidents or natural calamities. By introducing livestock insurance, the Administration seeks to reduce the vulnerability of farmers and encourage them to invest confidently in animal husbandry activities.
The scheme will cover important categories such as milch cattle, milch buffaloes, goats and pigs, which form the backbone of livestock rearing in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Farmers, especially small and marginal ones, Self Help Groups and women entrepreneurs engaged in dairy, goat rearing and piggery will greatly benefit from this initiative.
Livestock insurance will not only safeguard the livelihood of the farmers but also promote the adoption of modern scientific practices, better healthcare and improved productivity in the animal husbandry sector. It is expected to bring stability and encourage more youth and families to take up livestock farming as a sustainable source of income.
The Andaman & Nicobar Administration has always prioritised the welfare and economic upliftment of livestock rearers. The launch of this scheme in South Andaman District with coverage of 2,942 animals in the first round is another significant step towards building a resilient and prosperous rural economy in the Islands.
