Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 02: A General Body meeting of the Andaman & Nicobar ASHA Workers Union was held at Port Blair on 01.8.2026. Addressing the meeting, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU State Committee expressed concern over the fact that the ASHA Workers in A & N Islands are being paid the lowest remuneration in the country. He also briefly explained the movements being conducted by workers, farmers, youth and students in the country against the anti-people policies being pursued by the central government. Addressing the general body meeting, R. Surendran Pillai, President, CITU State Committee called upon the ASHA Workers working in Andaman & Nicobar Islands to remain united to fight for their demands.
Addressing the meeting, D. Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU State Committee said that it was due to the continuous agitation and persuasion with the authorities, the central government has recently approved an enhancement in the honorarium of ASHA Workers. He said that ASHA Workers, who are required to work often for 24 hours daily, are being paid a pittance as honorarium.
Anbumalar General Secretary, A & N ASHA Workers Union presented the report on the functioning of the Union. M. Hazra presided over the meeting. ASHA Workers actively participated in the discussion on their demands. The General Body meeting elected Anbumalar, Sabida Banu and Devki Munda as President, General Secretary and Treasurer respectively of the Union.
In a resolution adopted in the meeting, the Union demanded honorarium at par with the honorarium of ASHA Workers in Puducherry. The meeting noted that recently, the honorarium of ASHA Workers in Puducherry has been enhanced to Rs. 18,000/- per month. The meeting through another resolution demanded regular payment of incentives to the ASHA Workers of North and Middle Andaman District. The meeting, through another resolution, demanded TA/DA for ASHA Workers for attending all the official meetings. The meeting further urged the authorities to issue uniforms to all the ASHA Workers in North and Middle Andaman as the same was discontinued after 2012. The Union further demanded that UT share of Rs. 500/- per month to be resumed for the ASHA Workers in North and Middle Andaman District.
