Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 02: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), through the State Control Room, has forecast heavy rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the coming week. Fishermen have also been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during the adverse weather period beginning August 3.
According to the forecast, from August 3 to August 8, heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) is likely at isolated places over the Nicobar Islands on August 4, and over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on August 6. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are also likely to occur at isolated places across the Islands during the forecast period.
Wind speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands from August 3 to August 5, increasing to 50–60 kmph between August 6 and August 8, accompanied by lightning at isolated places.
A Fishermen Warning has also been issued for the Andaman & Nicobar coast. While sea conditions are expected to remain generally calm until August 2, squally weather with wind speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is likely to prevail along and off the Andaman & Nicobar coasts from August 3 to August 6. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
The IMD has also issued a Swell Surge Alert for the Andaman & Nicobar coast. Swell waves of 1.5–1.6 metres, with a wave period of 16–18 seconds, are expected till 11.30 p.m. on August 3. Boat operators have been advised to ply with utmost caution due to the possibility of surging waves, while tourists and the public have been urged to exercise care during recreational activities along the coast.
A Farmer Warning has also been issued. From August 3 to August 6, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds are likely to affect parts of the Islands. Farmers have been advised to take necessary precautions to protect standing crops, livestock, and agricultural equipment from the expected adverse weather conditions.
The outlook for the subsequent two days indicates little change in the prevailing weather conditions. Residents have been advised to remain updated with official weather bulletins and follow all safety advisories issued by the concerned authorities.
