Sri Vijaya Puram, July 31: The State Child Protection Society (SCPS), Directorate of Social Welfare, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, organized a community awareness programme on “Prevention of Child Labour and Protection of Child Rights” at Guptapara Panchayat. The programme was coordinated by Programme Manager, State child Protection Society in collaboration with the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPPDR) and Unique Disability ID (UDID) schemes. During the programme, participants were also sensitized about Child Helpline 1098 and informed that any child facing abuse, neglect, exploitation, trafficking, child labour, or any situation requiring immediate care and protection can be reported by calling 1098, enabling timely intervention by the concerned authorities. The resource person, Founder of Pankh NGO, explained the difference between child labour and age-appropriate household responsibilities. She highlighted that engaging child in hazardous work not only violates their legal rights but also deprives them of education, good health, and a secure future. She emphasized that every child has the right to learn, play, grow in a safe environment, and realize their full potential. Parents and community members were encouraged to support children’s education, discourage child labour, and remain vigilant in identifying children who may be at risk.
The Pradhan of Guptapara Panchayat appreciated the initiative of the Directorate of Social Welfare and stated that such awareness programmes strengthen community participation in protecting children and building a safer society.
Approximately 250 beneficiaries, including Panchayat representatives, parents, women, youth, and community members, participated in the programme. The programme concluded with a collective appeal that protecting children is not only the responsibility of the Government but also of every family and every citizen. A safe childhood today lays the foundation for a stronger, healthier, and more responsible society tomorrow.
