Sri Vijaya Puram, June 29: BJP, Andaman & Nicobar Islands State President Mr. Anil Kumar Tiwari has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to order an immediate investigation into the alleged assault and atrocities committed on local fishermen by Coast Guard personnel near East Island and Landfall Island on June 22, 2026.
In a representation addressed to the Union Home Minister, Mr. Tiwari stated that poor fishermen were allegedly subjected to brutal assault by Coast Guard personnel while carrying out fishing activities near the East Island/Landfall Island sea area. The incident reportedly resulted in severe injuries and bleeding among the fishermen.
The BJP State President requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to direct the concerned authorities to conduct an early and impartial investigation into the matter and initiate necessary disciplinary action, including suspension of the personnel found responsible. He also sought adequate medical assistance, protection and justice for the affected fishermen.
Referring to a letter received from the Convener of the Fishermen Cell dated June 28, 2026, Mr. Tiwari stated that the fishermen had alleged that the incident occurred between approximately 5:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on June 22, during which Coast Guard personnel allegedly assaulted them, causing injuries.
He described the issue as serious and deserving of urgent intervention, stating that the fishing community of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is deeply disturbed and disappointed over the alleged actions of the personnel involved.
Mr. Tiwari further observed that fishermen in the islands have traditionally maintained cordial relations with agencies such as the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Police, Forest Department and other security agencies. According to him, fishermen have often assisted these agencies by providing vital information and have served as the “eyes and ears” of coastal security.
He expressed concern that the recent incident has created fear among fishermen, with many reportedly hesitant to venture into the sea for fishing activities. Such a situation, he said, could adversely affect cooperation between fishermen and security agencies and may have implications for coastal security.
Seeking immediate intervention, Mr. Tiwari requested the Union Home Minister to direct the concerned authorities to probe the matter thoroughly and take suitable action under the relevant Coast Guard laws and other applicable provisions against those found responsible.
He also urged the authorities to ensure adequate medical assistance and protection to the injured fishermen and take necessary steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future.
