Sri Vijaya Puram, June 24: Ward No. 6 Councillor Mr. Aziz-ur-Rehman today demanded the resignation of BJP State President Mr. Anil Tiwari over a viral audio clip that has sparked political controversy in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Addressing a press conference, the councillor alleged that the conversation, purportedly involving Mr. Tiwari and BJP leader Mr. Anshuman Roy, raised serious questions regarding the functioning of the healthcare referral system and called for greater transparency.
Referring to the audio clip, Mr. Aziz-ur-Rehman alleged that it suggested discussions about expanding a “business” connected with hospital-related services. He claimed that if the recording was genuine, it was a matter of serious public concern and demanded that Mr. Tiwari either resign from his post within 48 hours or publicly clarify his position. He further warned that failure to do so would lead to protests involving political parties, elected representatives, unions and various public organisations.
The councillor appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take cognisance of the issue and requested that the matter be brought to the attention of the BJP’s central leadership. He alleged that the state party leadership had failed to address public concerns and accused Mr. Tiwari of prioritising personal interests over public welfare.
Mr. Aziz-ur-Rehman also linked the controversy to the condition of G.B. Pant Hospital, alleging that many patients continue to face inadequate medical facilities and are often compelled to travel to the mainland for specialised treatment. He claimed that families incur substantial expenses during medical evacuations and urged the authorities to improve healthcare infrastructure in the islands so that patients need not depend on treatment outside the Union Territory.
Questioning the BJP leadership, he said party workers should not remain silent if serious allegations are raised against their own leaders. He appealed to BJP workers to demand accountability and urged senior party functionaries to publicly clarify their stand on the controversy.
During the press conference, Mr. Aziz-ur-Rehman also criticised the pace of development in the islands, alleging that several long-pending issues, including road conditions, water supply, healthcare infrastructure and educational facilities, remain unresolved. He claimed that greater attention should be given to improving basic public services rather than focusing on other priorities.
The councillor further raised the issue of the growing stray pig menace in several localities, including Junglighat, Prem Nagar, Goalghar and adjoining areas. He alleged that residents have been facing serious inconvenience due to stray animals damaging public property and creating unhygienic conditions. He said he had already submitted a representation to the Port Blair Municipal Council seeking immediate action and warned that residents would launch an agitation if the issue was not addressed within seven days.
Concluding his address, Mr. Aziz-ur-Rehman reiterated his demand for the resignation of the BJP State President, alleging that the controversy had eroded public confidence. He maintained that if no action was taken, a large public protest would be organised with the participation of elected representatives, unions and civil society organisations.
Note: BJP leader Mr. Anshuman Roy has earlier denied the allegations relating to the viral audio clip, stating that the recording was edited, taken out of context and unrelated to any hospital referral business. BJP State President Mr. Anil Tiwari’s response to the latest statements made by Mr. Aziz-ul-Rehman was not immediately available. Even in this entire episode not official response has been given from BJP State unit to media.
