The International Day for Biological Diversity provides an opportunity to reflect on the inseparable bond between humanity and nature and to renew our shared commitment towards preserving the Earth’s rich and diverse ecosystems. The theme for 2026, “Acting Locally for Global Impact,” emphasizes that meaningful global progress in conserving biodiversity begins with dedicated local action and the active participation of governments, communities, women, youth, businesses and civil society.
The A&N Islands are endowed with remarkable natural wealth and are home to a unique variety of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to these Islands and found nowhere else in the world. The pristine coral reefs, extensive mangrove forests, dense tropical rainforests and rare wildlife together form an ecological treasure of immense national and global importance. Equally valuable is the traditional knowledge and sustainable lifestyle of our indigenous communities, which continue to demonstrate the importance of living in harmony with nature.
However, this delicate ecosystem is increasingly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, habitat destruction, marine pollution and unsustainable use of natural resources. Rising sea levels, coral bleaching and extreme weather events are clear reminders that environmental challenges faced locally have far-reaching global consequences.
On this significant occasion, I call upon every resident of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to actively contribute towards environmental conservation by adopting sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Reducing plastic usage, conserving water, safeguarding forests and coastal ecosystems, and supporting sustainable livelihoods are small but meaningful steps that can collectively create a substantial global impact.
Let us reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect and preserve our precious natural heritage for future generations. Through conscious efforts and united action at the local level, we can contribute towards building a healthier, greener and more sustainable world.
Jai Hind!
