
Sri Vijaya Puram, May 20: As accessibility is not merely a necessity but a fundamental right that empowers every individual to participate equally in society with dignity and independence. Observed globally on the third Thursday of May every year, Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is dedicated to spreading awareness about accessibility, inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities and senior citizens. The occasion emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive environment where no one is left behind and every individual can lead a life of confidence, participation and self-reliance.
Marking the occasion, Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRC), A & N Islands, Brookshabad, in association with Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Vayoshri Kendra (PMD-VK) under ALIMCO, successfully organised a distribution programme of assistive aids and appliances under the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) and ADIP Scheme.
A total of 30 senior citizen beneficiaries and two Divyang beneficiaries from Guptapara and Humfrygunj received various assistive and supportive devices aimed at improving mobility, comfort, independence and overall quality of life.
The assistive aids distributed included wheelchairs, wheelchairs with commode facilities, rollators, walking sticks, TLM kits, hearing aids, LS belts, spinal supports, knee braces, cervical collars and several other essential devices provided according to the individual needs of the beneficiaries.
The initiative was undertaken with the objective of supporting elderly persons experiencing age-related disabilities and mobility challenges, as well as persons with disabilities requiring rehabilitative assistance, by ensuring access to appropriate assistive devices that can significantly enhance their day-to-day functioning and well-being.
The programme reflected the continued commitment of CRC, A & N Islands and PMD-VK towards promoting accessibility, empowerment, rehabilitation support and social inclusion for Divyangjan and senior citizens across the islands.
