Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 25: Mr. Bishnu Pada ray, Member of Parliament from Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has urged the A&N Administration to urgently allot suitable land for establishing warehousing and allied infrastructure facilities of the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) in all three districts of the Islands i.e. South Andaman, North & Middle Andaman, and Nicobar District.
In a communication addressed to the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, the MP highlighted that the Central Warehousing Corporation, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, has been persistently pursuing the matter since 2023.
Mr. Ray stated that the Islands currently lack adequate facilities for scientific storage of foodgrains, pulses, cold storage, copra processing units, container yards, and other essential warehousing infrastructure. Given the geographical isolation and logistical challenges faced by the Islands, the absence of such facilities poses serious risks to food security, uninterrupted supply chains, and price stability.
The issue was also prominently raised during the Parliamentary Committee on Consumer Affairs, Foodgrains and Public Distribution meeting held on 8th and 9th January 2026 at Swaraj Dweep, South Andaman, where members expressed concern over the non-availability of land, which has prevented the CWC from extending its support for infrastructure development in the Islands.
The MP emphasized that due to the delay in land allotment, the CWC has expressed its inability to proceed with the establishment of warehousing facilities, which is emerging as a major bottleneck in strengthening storage and logistics infrastructure in the region. Therefore, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has requested the Administration to treat the matter as most urgent and to identify and allot suitable land at the following proposed locations, as suggested by the CWC i.e at Kamaraj Nagar in South Andaman, Mayabunder in North & Middle Andaman and Car Nicobar in Nicobar District.
Early allotment of land, he noted, will enable the Central Warehousing Corporation to initiate immediate action for setting up much-needed warehousing and allied facilities, thereby benefiting farmers, traders, consumers and the overall economy of the Islands.
