
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 18: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services celebrated the auspicious Mattu Pongal with deep reverence and enthusiasm at the Livestock Farm Complex (LFC), Dollygunj on 16th Jan, as a prominent highlight of the ongoing Animal Welfare Fortnight 2026 (14–30 January).
The celebration honoured the sacred role of cattle in agriculture, dairy production, rural livelihoods and the cultural heritage of the islands. Cattle at the farm were ceremonially bathed, their horns beautifully painted and decorated with fresh flowers, garlands and traditional ornaments. A special traditional Pongal was prepared and offered to the animals as a heartfelt expression of gratitude and respect for their tireless contribution to farming, food security and the economy.
Dr K A Naveen, Director of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, graced the occasion along with several senior officers and departmental staff. Speaking on the occasion, the Director emphasized that Mattu Pongal is far more than a festival, it serves as a powerful reminder of our moral and ethical responsibility to provide animals with proper nutrition, healthcare, dignified living conditions and freedom from cruelty.
