Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 09: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has claimed that the power crisis in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will come to an end by November 27, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply to island residents. He said that under various Central Government initiatives, the islands are moving rapidly toward becoming diesel-free and solar-dependent, marking a major step toward sustainable development.
Addressing the Vyapari Sammelan organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, the MP said that continuous efforts by the Central and UT Administration are paving the way for significant infrastructure growth in the islands in the coming months.
During his detailed address, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray made several key announcements covering roads, industries, agriculture, and the energy sector, assuring people that “the coming months will mark solid progress in the islands’ overall development.”
He revealed that the long-awaited National Highway (NH-4) from Baratang to Diglipur would be completed by November 26, calling it “a dream project of the people” that will ease travel across North and Middle Andaman.
Highlighting the region’s growing reputation for organic products, he proudly mentioned that Andaman’s local produce—especially organic coconut-based products and biscuits—has earned national recognition and is now being sold at premium prices in mainland markets. “Our island-made products are now competing with national brands,” he said, adding that the administration is encouraging small-scale industries and self-help groups to participate in this growth.
On the issue of national security, Ray voiced concern about illegal immigration from Bangladesh, announcing that the BJP will soon launch a ‘Videshi Hatao, Andaman Bachao’ (Remove Foreigners, Save Andaman) campaign to ensure the safety and demographic stability of the islands.
Touching upon the agriculture sector, he described Andaman’s soil as “highly fertile” and cited new developments such as the introduction of a ‘Pink Guava’ variety that yields fruit throughout the year, producing up to 50 guavas per tree.
A significant part of his speech focused on energy independence. Ray announced that the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has successfully discovered gas reserves in the Andaman basin—a first in the region’s history—paving the way for long-term energy self-reliance. He added that the government is also aiming to make the islands diesel-free, with every BPL family to receive a free 2KW solar connection, while wealthier families and businesses will be encouraged to switch to solar power. “Our goal is to make Andaman a complete ‘Green Power Zone’,” he said.
In the Nicobar District, Mr. Ray said that under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), three new road projects have been launched with a total cost of Rs.50 crore. He also announced a Rs.47 crore approval for the construction of the Campbell Bay Breakwater Gate, which will greatly improve marine operations and connectivity.
Addressing ongoing administrative and banking challenges, Ray mentioned that several technical and land development issues have been resolved. He confirmed that permissions for multiple stalled projects have now been cleared, and work is set to restart soon. “We are overcoming the bottlenecks one by one,” he said, assuring locals of transparent processes and faster approvals for land conversion and business licenses.
Speaking on defence and strategic security, the MP said that India is maintaining strict vigilance over Chinese activities near Coco Island, and mentioned about the establishment of a major defence infrastructure in Andaman. “Our government is committed to safeguarding national interests while ensuring local development,” he affirmed.
The MP further stated that under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)’, approval has been granted for the construction of 600 km of new roads, with opportunities for local contractors to participate in the work. He also emphasized the revival of old jetty projects, stating that Rs.670 crore has been sanctioned to rebuild damaged jetties and maritime structures across the islands.
Mr. Ray also spoke about social and employment concerns, noting that efforts are being made to secure more government jobs for local youth. He said that communication has been established with the Union Home Ministry to ensure that islanders get adequate representation in national recruitment.
Concluding his speech, Bishnu Pada Ray called upon farmers and entrepreneurs to take the lead in making the islands self-sufficient in agriculture, tourism, and industry. “The Andaman is entering a new era of growth. From gas and roads to power and defence, every sector is progressing rapidly,” he said. “In the coming budget, a major allocation has been proposed for the islands, which will further accelerate the pace of development.”
