Port Blair, Feb 21: The first round of Pulse Polio Immunisation programme was conducted on 19 Feb 12 by Station Health Organisation, Port Blair for the children of families staying in defence areas. The programme was organised by Surg Cdr L Vijay Kumar, Officer-in-Charge, Station Health Organisation, Port Blair under the supervision of the Command Medical Officer, Andaman & Nicobar Command.
Ten fixed Polio immunization booths were set up to attain 100% coverage for children below 05 Yrs of age, staying in Minnie Bay, Haddo, Delanipur, Birchgunj, Telerabad and Prothrapur. The event was inaugurated by Surg Capt KM Adhikari, Command Medical Officer, Andaman & Nicobar Command at Immunisation Centre, Station Health Organisation, Port Blair by administering polio drops to the children.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are free from polio cases for last 7-8 years. Booth immunisation was followed by a house to house visit by the pulse polio immunisation team to cover the children who missed the doses. 922 children received Polio drops in this first round of immunization programme. Children of defence personnel, defence civilians and nearby civil populace were covered in the Immunisation Campaign.
