Shaheed Dweep, Oct. 21: The second leg of the Astro-tourism Guide Training Workshop organized by the Directorate of Information, Publicity & Tourism, in collaboration with Open Space Foundation and C-STERC got underway at Shaheed Dweep today, with 53 participants taking part in hands-on sessions to strengthen and sustain the island’s growing astro-tourism ecosystem.
Building on the success of the first workshop in Sri Vijaya Puram, this phase focuses on leveraging existing astro-tourism infrastructure and improving local capacity. Shaheed Dweep, already a pioneer in astro-tourism with over 15 telescopes used across resorts and tourism ventures, is being supported through this initiative to design engaging, sustainable, and conservation-sensitive astro-tourism experiences.
The Day 1 sessions focused on Fundamentals of Astronomy, Astro-tourism Concepts, and Telescope Handling & Observations. Participants also explored Daytime Astronomy and Solar Observation, learning practical methods for safe solar viewing and understanding how to interpret celestial phenomena for visitors.
The workshop is being facilitated by Ms. Anupama Pradeepan and Shri Bharat Kumar, Astronomy Educators with C-STERC and the Open Space Foundation, along with Shri Udhay Bhasker, Board Member (Open Space Foundation). Together, they are guiding participants in dark sky preservation practices, experiential tourism design, and effective use of astronomical tools and digital aids such as Stellarium.
Organized with the support of the A&N Administration, this initiative aims to position Andaman as a Dark Sky and Sustainable Astro-tourism Destination, fostering community-led conservation, environmental awareness, and innovative tourism models that preserve the islands’ natural heritage while creating livelihood opportunities.
