Port Blair, Apr 28: It has been learnt from reliable sources that the Commander in Chief of Andaman Nicobar Command, Air Marshal P K Roy, has banned crossing of the common runway of Port Blair International Airport and INS Utkrosh during flying hours. According to sources since morning 7.00 am to evening 7.00 pm no defence vehicles are allowed to cross the runway.
Highly placed sources in ANC told Andaman Sheekha that this decision has been taken for the safety of all aircrafts and nowhere else in India such crossing is allowed in Defence Air Base.
Though there were rumours of a minor incident at the runway few days back when a defence vehicle had reportedly entered the runway, when an aircraft was about to take off but Officers in ANC have categorically denied such reports.
“There were no such MAJOR incident at the runway,” a top officer of ANC clarified.
Many believe that such decision of CINCAN was necessary in Andamans for the safety of Aircrafts as well as passengers. However, official confirmation regarding this decision is still awaited.
